Since the November 2000 election, when George W. Bush and Al Gore were in the heat of controversy over Florida’s election, about hanging chads, dimpled chads, and pregnant chads, the suspicion around “rigged” elections has gained enormous interest. It seems that unless an election is won by a large margin that erases any suspicion of “cheating,” we now question and scrutinize whether our elections are stolen.

It is no secret that election fraud and the possibility of fraudsters “gaming” the election process exist. We all have heard stories of dead people or non-citizens voting; even Disney characters have been identified as casting a vote for a particular candidate for some political office. Right here in my hometown, a person was caught casting multiple ballots for their favorite candidate. How and why does this continue?

THE WHY’s AND HOW’s

Suspicions of “election rigging” go back to the 1960 JFK election, when many suspected that Mayor Daily of Chicago essentially “helped” JFK beat Richard Nixon by allegedly stuffing ballot boxes to give John F.Kennedy the electoral votes he needed to win the Presidency. So this is nothing new, yet it has continued for decades with little reform, except for new technologies used to cast and tabulate votes. Unfortunately, many think reform has been slow for one simple reason: it would minimize or eliminate cheating, and sadly, some people don’t want that to change.

This stems from a fundamental flaw in handling our elections in the USA, it’s the condition of our hearts. This is the flaw! Jeremiah put it this way: “The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked: who can know it?” (Jer. 17:9). Jesus said: “For out of the heart come evil thoughts, murder, adultery, sexual immorality, theft [cheating], false witness [lying], slander” (Matt. 15:19). Paul mentions: “For I know that nothing good dwells in me, that is, in my flesh. For I have the desire to do what is right, but not the ability to carry it out” (Rom. 7:18).

Yes, we all want safe and secure elections. But until our hearts, our human nature, change, that doesn’t seem likely anytime soon! Notice, “But each person is tempted when he is lured and enticed by his own desire. Then desire when it has conceived gives birth to sin, and sin when it is fully grown brings forth death” (Jas. 1:14-15).

When it comes to the voting process, a lot is at stake––power, notoriety, attention, influence, and money and sometimes, lots of it! Many of today’s leaders enter office with average portfolios, and after a few years in public office, accrue sizable estates that often reach into the millions of dollars! How does this happen?

It happens because “privilege” comes with position and, unfortunately, leads to temptations to cheat and lie for self-gain (Pro. 11:1 and 12:22). This is nothing new. It’s the legacy of mankind’s nature. This underscores the attraction to stay in office.

METHODS USED TO GAIN ADVANTAGE

Because leadership positions offer influence, individuals face many temptations. Once a person becomes influential, people notice and realize what those in power can do for them. This often triggers corruption and deceit from those who want something from those influencers. So they make offers that may compromise the integrity of the person or process that’s in position or play. This can lead to blackmail, extortion, or even life-threatening situations for the person in power, their family, or friends. It’s no secret that people have been eliminated for not doing what they were supposed to do.

This often leads to “unequal measures” that produce corrupt results because circumstances aren’t handled fairly or honestly. This is what has happened in many of our elections. And God does not think too highly of these kinds of methods. Notice: “Divers weights, and measures, both of them are alike an abomination to the Lord…” (Pro. 20:10). Furthermore, “Divers weights are an abomination unto the Lord; and balances of deceit are not good” (Pro. 20:230).

Without the ability to secure our election process, the vulnerability to cheating remains. The fact that very few states require strict identification procedures that prove you are who you say you are and that you’re an American citizen illustrates how easy it is to deceive the election process. We all know you need an ID to pay for a hotel room, buy a plane ticket, or get a driver’s license. It’s hard to believe common sense doesn’t convince enough lawmakers that this is only reasonable if we want to secure the integrity of our election results.

THE DANGERS OF NOT HAVING BOUNDARIES

The prophet Ezekiel has a warning for those of us in this country today. As this prophet was commissioned to cry aloud to the people of the land and tell them of their sins, so God’s Church is commissioned today to participate in the Watchman’s role: to witness and warn the people that if we do not take righteous measures by repenting and correcting our sins, we will lose our country! God is expecting us to take responsibility and hold ourselves accountable! Otherwise, we will incur His judgment—that is the pattern He has used. And remember, He is the same yesterday, today, and forever.

Ezekiel heralds his warning message: “Therefore thus says the Lord God: Because you are all become backsliders, behold, therefore I will gather you… So will I gather you in mine anger and in my fury, and I will leave you and melt you. Yea, I will gather you and blow upon you in the fire of my wrath… As silver is melted in the midst of the furnace, so shall you be melted in the midst thereof; …And the word of the Lord came unto me saying… There is a conspiracy of her prophets in the midst thereof, like a roaring lion ravening the prey; they have devoured souls; they have taken the treasure and precious things;… Her priests have violated my law and have profaned my holy things: they have put no difference between the holy and profane, neither have they shown difference between the unclean and clean, and have hid their eyes from my sabbaths, and I am profaned among them. Her princes (leaders) in the midst thereof are like wolves ravening the prey… And her prophets have smeared them with untempered mortar [slime, frivolity, foolish things], seeing vanity [idolatry, deceptive lying], and divining lies unto them, saying, Thus says the Lord God, when the Lord has not spoken. The people of the land have used deceit and exercised robbery [plundered, stole, spoiled, plucked], and have vexed the poor and needy: yea, they have oppressed the stranger wrongfully” (Ezek. 22:19-29).

This describes our day and age, and this condition of corruption overflows into our election process and deceives us about who the winners and losers are. A very fundamental, but crucial segment of our social order is to correct the voting process because it is a means for those “princes [lawmakers, political leaders] in the midst thereof who are like wolves ravening the prey (the people), to shed blood, and to destroy souls and to get dishonest gain” (Ezk. 22:27).

Our present lawmakers must hold accountable those who cheat the election process! Otherwise, make no mistake, God is clear:  by the “voice of Ezekiel the prophet,” He will hold us accountable. We can be confidently sure God is watching and evaluating our national demeanor!
